Elkin JAM (Junior Appalachian Musicians)

Calendar Jan 21, 2026 at 3:30 pm, runs for 13 weeks

Open to all 4th-8th graders (at any school), the Junior Appalachian Musicians program provides instruction in traditional mountain music. Elkin JAM participants may choose between banjo, guitar, fiddle*, or mandolin. Instruments provided as needed.

*new fiddle students with no previous experience only begin in the Fall semester. 

First class: Wednesday, January 21

Fall Break: Wednesday, April 15

Spring Break: March 25

Last Class/Final Performance: Wednesday, April 15

Music Theory for Any Instrument

Learn the why and how behind your favorite songs with this music theory class. Whether a seasoned player who needs a refresher, or a music beginner excited to learn how music works, this class is fabulous for all stages and skill levels. This is considered an adult level class, generally open to older teens and adults, though certain younger participants who exhibit maturity may be able to participate. Guitar - Music Reading with Pick

This class focuses on developing music-reading skills on guitar using a pick (plectrum), withan emphasis on single-note playing, picking technique, timing, and musical accuracy.Students will learn to read standard music notation and apply it through structured exercises and repertoire drawn from a variety of musical styles. The class is appropriate for adult learners and older teens, and is open to players with basic guitar experience who want to strengthen their reading skills and overall musicianship on guitar.

REQUIRED MATERIALS: Acoustic or electric guitar, Hal Leonard Guitar Method – CompleteEdition (ISBN-10: 0881881392).

Bilingual note: Raul is bilingual and can teach the class in both English and Spanish as needed. Raul es bilingüe y puede impartir la clase tanto en inglés comoen español según sea necesario.

Guitar - Music Reading with Classical & Fingerstyle Focus

This class introduces students to classical and fingerstyle guitar techniques, with anemphasis on reading standard music notation, right-hand finger independence, toneproduction, and musical expression. Students will develop music-reading skills whileapplying foundational techniques through carefully selected repertoire and technicalexercises. The class is appropriate for adult learners and older teens, and is open to playerswith basic guitar experience who are interested in developing a more expressive andversatile fingerstyle approach.

REQUIRED MATERIALS: Classical or acoustic guitar, Hal Leonard Classical Guitar MethodBook 1 (ISBN-10: 0634093290).

Eli's Country/Rock Jam

Musicians of all levels can join this fun play-along class! Instruction will be in guitar but other instruments and singers are welcome. This is an adult class but younger students are welcome as long as they can participate at an adult level.

This class is a music education session designed to teach guitar players how to effectively use a capo to enhance their playing and how to utilize the Nashville Number System. This class is ideal for students with fundamental guitar skills who want to improve their playing and understanding of the instrument. This is an adult class but younger students are welcome as long as they can participate at an adult level.
